22. Golden Glow

Golden Glow
7x12
Ptg 1, Day 1 of Residency

This is the first Painting that I painted while I was the Artist in Residence at Catoctin Mountain National Park.  I got there a little later than I expected, and was tired.  But the light was fantastic and I couldn't wait to start painting.  This was just outside my cabin.  The tress were lit up in the distance and seemed to glow with a light all their own...2 weeks later the leaves had filled in to such an extent that the trees in the distance were no longer visible...

21. Breaking Day

12x12  oil on canvas board

This is another piece that I painted during the Chestertown Plein-Aire Festival. I actually got up and out very early one morning and drove to the Eastern Neck Natural Wildlife Refuge, which was about 45 minutes away. I wanted to get there as the sun rose - but I was a little late. I was set up by 7 am, and the sky still had this amazing peachy pink glow, underneath a bank of silvery clouds. It was worth the effort to be in such a beautiful place - but it was cold, 38 degrees, and there was as steady cold wind off of the water.....

30. Song of Spring

11x14, oil on panel

I painted this during the plein-aire festival Paint the Town in Chestertown MD last week. This was my favorite painting that I did during the week - but not the one that I sold! I titled it "Song of Spring" because I was seranaded by bull frogs as I painted - pretty cool!

As I painted this - I was reminded of the words that accompany "Taps"...

28. Quiet Morning

9x12   oil on board

It feels like I have not had enough time to paint lately...so it was wonderful to get back into my studio yesterday and paint this!  It is loosely based on a photo reference taken early in the morning at Riverbend Park in Virginia.

27. Glow

12x16 oil on canvas board

I painted this on canvas that I mounted onto board.  It was a very nice surface to paint on!  I was really looking at the composition on this one, trying to control the eye as it moves through the painting.  Then I was working to get the idea of the light emanating from behind the tree.  It really does seem to glow!

26. Morning Glow

SOLD

12x7 oil on canvas board

I like the way the format changes the composition and the emphasis of the painting.  My eye lingers in the shadow more in this format.  Compare this painting to 23 - same subject, bu a different composition.
